Acid IBS Reflux

Acid IBS Reflux - a disorder where the lower esophageal sphincter has become weak and incompetent whereby allowing acid to simply run up the esophagus.

The Diagnosis

Acid relux is often referred to as GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and is usually chronic in nature. The most common symptoms are heartburn, regurgitation and trouble swallowing.

The investigations used to determine GERD would include barium swallow x-rays and esophageal manometry. If you have chronic acid reflux, it is best to avoid eating two hours before going to bed at night. Another useful tip is to elevate your bed slightly to prevent acid from running up the esophagus.

Many patients have had success sleeping on the left side to reduce the reflux episodes. There are also drug treatments available to reduce the amount of acid produced in your stomach. More severe procedures would include surgery to strengthen the esophageal sphincter to stop the acid reflux.

Tips Provided

At one point in my IBS experience, I had acid in my mouth in the mornings as that is usually when I would be able to taste it. I purchased a thicker pillow to elevate my head so that the acid would not run up my esophagus and it helped a great deal.

The other thing I did was to drink plenty of water about 1-2 hours prior to sleeping and this helps to dilute my stomach. Reduction of meat in your diet would also help to cut down acid production.
