Gastroenteritis – An infection/inflammation of the small intestine and stomach due to certain viruses or bacteria in the diet or medication and is not IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

This condition is commonly onset by viruses/bacteria in the food ingested. There are many types of bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus, E. Coli, etc. Some of the foods ingested are not properly prepared or reheated such as seafood, meat dishes and dairy products.

When this condition exists, the most common symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting. Nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite may all be present as well. Symptoms usually last for only 6 days on average. Provided you treat the condition properly, your health should return within a week after onset.

Always remember to replace the lost fluids by drinking plenty of water to prevent mild to moderate dehydration. Dehydration results from the water lost in the stools when diarrhea is present.

It is often helpful to take probiotics and zinc after the onset of the stomach flu.

Antibiotics is rarely used for this, however should not be excluded.
