What symptoms are relieved by this product?

The ingredients in the tablets (5-HT3 receptor antagonist) would help to suppress the frequent and urgent needs for a bowel movement in women. It is mainly used by women who have had severe diarrhea for at least 6 months.

How effective is the product towards the symptoms?

This product has only been shown to be effective in females. It has not been shown to be effective in males. Most women who have used this medication, found that it has been very helpful in relieving diarrhea and in finding some regularity in their bowel movements. Some users however, are constipated as a result of this medication.

What is the recommended duration of use for this product?

Presently, most users have continued to use this medication indefinitely. The prescribing physician will need to make the call on when to stop further usage. Due to the hefty price tag per month however, this may also play a factor on your duration of use.

Are there any side-effects during and after product usage?

Although death is rare, this product has caused a small percentage of users to have ischemic colitis, a lack of blood flow to the bowel, during product usage.
This may cause hospitalization and the possibility for surgery. The more common side effects are:

  • abdominal discomfort or pain
  • anxiety
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • gas
  • nausea
  • trouble sleeping

The long-term effects on users are not yet available since the product was only placed on the market in the year 2000.

Are the results permanent after the product usage has stopped?

No. The original symptoms will recur within a week’s time if the user stops product usage. Therefore, this is a medication that must be taken regularly to suppress your symptoms of diarrhea.

Product Review

Lotronex should only be taken by females who are faced with severely debilitating diarrhea. The effects of this drug, only holds as long as it is continually used on a daily basis. I would not want any IBS sufferer to be drug dependant.

Therefore, it is best to spend your efforts on finding a way to reverse your IBS symptoms without being dependant on medications. Besides, the cost of this drug is extremely high and only a small handful of IBS sufferers can afford the monthly payments for a pro-longed period of use.

I’d recommend spending your hard-earned money on treatments that provide permanent lasting results that help to heal your irregular bowel function and other IBS symptoms even after the treatments have stopped.

Now, it is possible for those women with severe diarrhea, to take Lotronex simultaneously with treatments that I have recommended here. However, I would recommend stopping the use of this drug once my guidelines have been followed for 1-2 months. The temporary use of this drug is only meant to provide relief to those IBS sufferers who find the bouts of diarrhea too unbearable at the present time.

My suggestion however, is to stay away from Lotronex since it only provides temporary effects. It requires you to continually use the product which is my #1 caveat.

Also take note that you will require a doctor in your area of residence who is enrolled in the Prescribing Program for Lotronex. This medication is currently only available in the United States, however it has been approved but not yet marketed in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea.
